In Aether Summon you can acquire tomes (packs of 20 random scrolls) either for acquiring scrolls for your collection, or to use those tomes to play chaos brawls (draft modality that requires 3 tomes per player).
Playground tomes nonetheless don't provide you with scrolls for your collection, they're used only for strict game-play.
Playground tomes are meant to be the backbone of hobby and practice play. This is because you get 12 free tomes on sign-up and a weekly refill up to 9.
Since for playground codices you don't need to own the scrolls you play, you always have access to the whole library as you please, these tomes can't provide you with anything, so their only purpose is to be used for chaos brawls.
That's why, besides the sign-up gift, you get 9 free tomes per week, which allow you to play 3 free chaos brawl drafts per week (since each draft requires 3 tomes per player).
Besides that you always have unlimited access to all the codex building and scrolls in the game for free when building codices and playing in this game mode.
That's what makes them the backbone of the game and practice, since you can test codex lists with all existing scrolls in the game, you can first try the strategy or list in playground duels and tournaments, if happy, and only then, invest in acquiring it for competitive tournaments. If you're not interested in joining competitive games, tournaments or having a collection you don't need to spend money at all to play the game in full a bit every week
The scrolls in these tomes are themselves virtual and are under no circumstance added to your own collection - the tomes themselves can't be opened and the chaos brawls that use them also don't add your brawl picks to your collection after the event is finished.
The biggest advantage of these tomes is that they allow you to easily practice chaos brawls or keep a healthy once-in-a-while hobby.
